Prior to boarding our flight to Hong Kong, Geoff and I collected the valueless currency we had amassed over the past nine weeks for a final tally. The purple Wu Jiao’s are worth 0.50 RMB—give or take 8 US cents. The lighter Yi Jiao’s are worth 0.10 RMB, literally breaking down into a fraction of a penny. Our count came in just short of 16 RMB. The split between us was almost even.

Ever the prudent saver, Geoff stashed his away in his suitcase. I bought a candy bar in our apartment lobby. Buyer’s remorse? Not exactly, but the satisfaction of unloading such a hefty wad of bills far exceeded that of the half-melted chocolate.
